Many seniors choose to live on the wilder side. Some even bungee jump or skydive at least once during the golden years. However, Perth, WA, home care professionals want to highlight a few elderly explorers who stand out from the norm. They are inspirational as well as honourable. From living on an island to hiking the Appalachian trail, these 4 seniors have lived exciting lives.
1. Ian Stuart Argus
Ian Stuart Argus, age 66, is a yacht business owner. He decided to book an 11-night trip in solitude on an island. What’s even more interesting about the island is that it was recently formed from an eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano. He survived on the island eating nothing but seagull eggs and squid for 11 days.
2. Grandma Gatewood
Grandma Gatewood is famous for hiking the entirety of the Appalachian Trail multiple times throughout her life, including in 1963 at age 75. She is also credited as being the first woman and the oldest person to ever hike the trail. Though she passed away in 1973 at age 85, her adventurous legacy still lives on.
3. Bernard Jordan
Bernard Jordan was a World War II veteran who fought in Normandy on D-Day. On D-Day’s 70th Anniversary, the then 89-year-old nursing home resident snuck away from Great Britain to attend the commemorative ceremony in France. Jordan passed away in 2015 at age 90, but his respectful story as a World War II veteran is still felt in many hearts.
4. John Greenlees
This retired railway worker zipped across the River Clyde to raise money for the University of Glasgow’s cancer fund. Because his daughter was a cancer survivor, he had in-family experience with the disease and wanted to help in any way he could. He crossed the river at 88 years old and raised approximately £1,255.00.
